{"id":394,"date":"2010-11-10T14:32:15","date_gmt":"2010-11-10T22:32:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/216.92.226.17\/?p=394"},"modified":"2010-11-10T19:25:39","modified_gmt":"2010-11-11T03:25:39","slug":"kaddish-two-part-harmony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/erinvang.com\/?p=394","title":{"rendered":"kaddish in two-part harmony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>by<br \/>\nmira z. amiras, ph.d.<br \/>\nand<br \/>\nErin Vang, BMus, MMus, PMP<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Memoirist and the Musician. \u00a0The memoirist immerses all night in midrash on the Kaddish. \u00a0The musician spends all night in her own midrashic response. \u00a0And making the music of kaddish. \u00a0Making music kadosh. \u00a0A flurry of emails ensue between the two. \u00a0They blog. \u00a0Their blogs lock horns, as do the writers themselves. \u00a0They try to live the life they are given \u2014 with now a new ingredient. \u00a0A project has begun: \u00a0a kaddish in two-part harmony.<\/p>\n<p>The cast of characters:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the musician writer who must play and record &#8220;Kaddish&#8221; every day for a year and a day<\/li>\n<li>the listener writer who will hear it for a year and a day<\/li>\n<li>the pair of writers who will write, not always by blog<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>one take, no editing, no practicing Kaddish before recording it (practicing yes, Kaddish no)<\/li>\n<li>one Kaddish every day, and multiple Kaddishim on all Yahrtzeits<\/li>\n<li>the music is allowed and expected to evolve<\/li>\n<li>the writer and the musician will not meet during the year, neither face to face nor by phone<\/li>\n<li>the writing must not be allowed to become a daily tyranny for either party<\/li>\n<li>the writer and the musician must not fall in love; to wit, the focus is on the material at hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The supporting cast:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the musician&#8217;s wife<\/li>\n<li>the dog and the cats of both, who sit patiently (mostly) next to the writers and who will inevitably be heard on the musician&#8217;s recordings<\/li>\n<li>the mutual friend who sits at the fulcrum, giggling (yes, what <em>have<\/em> you done?)<\/li>\n<li>the musician&#8217;s rebbe, who will provide the words, the voice, and the rebbeness<\/li>\n<li>the musician&#8217;s dad, who has requested the impossible<\/li>\n<li>the healers who have left us<\/li>\n<li>the tzaddik\u2014lamed vavnik\u2014in the world to come<\/li>\n<li>the heeler who died<\/li>\n<li>all those who have departed, in one way or another<\/li>\n<li>disease, misfortune, and the woes of the world<\/li>\n<li>malkah, the shekhinah herself, if she so wills it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Memoirist is not required to listen to Kaddish. She must hear Kaddish.
